Dhoti, also known as dhuti, veshti, dhotar, mundu, etc. is a 5 yard long unstitched piece of cloth which is worn by men. Nowadays many women are draping dhoti to depict style. Though the precise date of origin of Dhoti is not known, but it can be traced back to 5th century BC. According to research, evidences have been found that signifies men of the Indus Valley Civilization wearing Dhoti. Needles made of bones and woods were used to spun and weave cotton.

Dhoti being a very comfortable and easy to wear attire become very popular all over the country. Secondly, Indian dhoti made of cotton was well adapted to the dry, hot summers of India. The garment is usually white or cream in color. Although different variations has hit the market, and you can see dhoti in different interesting hues. They are worn on special occasions for a perfect look. It is economical and airy, however, the apprehension that the Dhoti will come off the waist is only an uncomfortable feeling. There are two styles of wearing a Dhoti. One is wearing it just by wrapping around the waist. One can simply hold the two ends, wrap around the waist and tie a knot so that it doesn’t fall. The other style is called Pancha Kachham (five fold tuck in), which is prescribed by the Sastras for householders. It is worn by the married Hindu men during functions. This style is known for preserving the magnetic forces in the human body.

When it comes to tradition and culture, India holds its head high. Saree, salwar kameez, dhoti, kurta are some of the traditional dress belongs to India and worn with pride and dignity. Dhoti is an Indian traditional wear for men worn with kurta or shirt. Wearing dhoti is a tradition that is followed generation after generation. The word derives from the Sanskrit word dhauta and is known by different names at different places such as Laacha in Punjab, dhuti in Bengal, veshti in Tamil Nadu, Panche in Karnataka, Mundu or Veshti in Kerala, Dhotar in Maharashtra and so on.

Unlike other dresses, Dhoti remains unstitched and is usually 5 yards long, which makes it sacred and pure. It is tied around waist and legs. Though there is a particular method to tie the knot to add grace to the attire, however, people can drape it to make a style statement of their own. It is considered as a formal ethnic wear and is worn during weddings, visiting temples and other family functions.  In certain parts of the country, men wear Lungi, which is a similar piece of cloth and draped in the same manner. However, it is meant for informal occasion or as nightwear.

There can be different styles of draping a dhoti; however, the most common style is as follows:

·         Take a dhoti and find its middle.
·         After dividing the cloth, tie a knot near the navel.
·         Make a series of folds on the right side and tuck the folded part at the waist.
·         Again, make another series of folds on the left side.
·         Take the folded part of cloth behind from between your legs and then tuck it.
